New Mexico Lottery CEO Elected Chair of Powerball® Group

ALBUQUERQUE – New Mexico Lottery CEO Tom Romero has been elected chairman of the Powerball® Group by the 33 lotteries belonging to the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). The non-profit MUSL organization operates Powerball and other drawing games on behalf of participating lotteries.

New Mexico Lottery CEO Tom RomeroDuring a one-year term that begins July 1, Romero will oversee management of the Powerball game, including its $2 million annual budget and its rules and policies. During Fiscal Year 2012, Powerball players nationwide purchased approximately $4 billion in tickets and won nearly $2 billion in prizes while generating approximately $1.2 billion for worthy causes such as college scholarships, economic development and state park preservation.

In Fiscal Year 2013, Romero was elected as the Powerball Group’s Vice Chair. He also served as MUSL secretary and as a member of the association’s security and integrity committee.

Romero, a native of Tucumcari, has been with the New Mexico Lottery since its launch in 1996. Before becoming the lottery’s CEO in 2006, Romero was the executive vice president of lottery security. Romero, who began a law enforcement career with the Tucumcari Police Department, also served as bureau chief of the Law Enforcement Academy and Special Investigations Division within the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

Legislative Lottery Scholarships

In New Mexico, the profit from the sale of all lottery games benefits a college-tuition assistance program. Since its inception in April 1996, the lottery has raised $569 million for education and more than 82,600 students have attended college on Legislative Lottery Scholarships.
