Las Cruces Woman Wins $50,000 New Mexico Lottery Prize

ALBUQUERQUE – A Las Cruces woman won a $50,000 prize from the New Mexico Lottery.

On Friday, Anna Flores and her husband stopped for gas before driving to El Paso to attend their granddaughter’s track meet. While Oscar Flores worked the pump, Anna Flores bought Scratchers following her habit to play the first game that catches her eye.

“I always get the first one I see even if the clerk tells me there’s a new game,” Flores recalled for lottery officials in Albuquerque.

Her habit paid off. Before leaving the parking lot, Flores revealed a $50,000 prize from the $5 “Hot Streak” game, stunning her husband.

“I said, ‘Babe, I just won $50,000,’” Flores recalled for lottery officials in Albuquerque. “We were both crying.”

Flores, said she plans to use her prize to pay bills and make a donation to the Santa Rosa De Lima Church. Her lucky ticket came from Diamond Shamrock No. 1289 located at 1401 E. Lohman Ave. in Las Cruces.

Other recent Las Cruces winners include Scratcher players Samuel Hernandez who won $15,000; Dorris Hamilton, $10,000; and Rebecca Garibay, $1,000.

Legislative Lottery Scholarships

Sales of New Mexico Lottery games fund a college scholarship program. Since its inception in 1996, the New Mexico Lottery has raised $438 million for public education and more than 61,000 students have attended college on Legislative Lottery Scholarships.

As of the Spring 2009 semester, 6,700 high school graduates and GED recipients from Doña Ana County have received $33 million in Legislative Lottery Scholarships.
