Theresa Waxman is lucky but her husband, David, may be even luckier.
The Roswell woman on Monday won $60,000 playing the New Mexico Lottery’s “Color of Money” Scratcher game. Moments after receiving her check at lottery headquarters in Albuquerque, Waxman called her husband at work to proudly tell him she was buying the Harley Davidson motorcycle he had been admiring the day before.
Waxman came into her winning lottery ticket in something of a fluke.
“I went into the store to get a $5 Crossword game, but the clerk accidentally pulled the Color of Money ticket,” Waxman recalled. “I told her I’d take that one, too.”
Now she’s dreaming of a possible trip to Hawaii.
“I think it’s the only state I haven’t been to,” Waxman said, describing herself as an Army brat.
The 45-year-old housewife purchased her winning ticket at the Town & Country store at 600 W. College Blvd. in Roswell. The lottery retailer has sold 21 large prize-winning lottery tickets ranging between $1,000 and $100,000.
Lottery Beneficiaries in Chaves County
All net revenues from the sale of lottery games benefit the Legislative Lottery Scholarship program, which provides tuition assistance for New Mexico residents attending the state’s public colleges and universities.
Since its inception in 1996, the lottery has raised $331 million for public education in New Mexico. More than 48,500 students have received Legislative Lottery Scholarships in the last decade. As of the Spring 2007 semester, 1,740 high school graduates from Chaves County have received nearly $5.4 million in Legislative Lottery Scholarships. More than 620 of those students have graduated from college.
